Abstract
Archaeological work on the site of Heping Dao B (HPDB) on the small island of Heping Dao -now annexed to the main island-, located off Keelung (northern Taiwan), has revealed in the last 10 years a very complex archaeological deposit formed by an uninterrupted occupation during thousands of years, since early prehistory in Taiwan (Neolithic) until the present. In spite of the urban character of this site, indeed a palimpsest, remains from key periods in the history of Taiwan are well preserved. In particular, the preservation of prehistoric remains composed of domestic units, remains from the European colonial period, and structures from WWII, is outstanding. In this paper we will update the so-far published information about the prehistoric period and the European colony, focused on the 17th century.
